Summer flowers for me start with the arrival of Peonies. And its been peony perfection this English growing season, with summer flowers virtually on tap.
Now in July, with summer in full swing; technically the British peony season is finished so its over to the fantastic Dutch suppliers to continue the abundance of summer flowers through the season.
The endless cold wet spring, although boring for us humans has certainly done its job for the dormant roots & sleeping energy below the soil. All the energy is now above the soil knocking us humans out with full on colour & scent. Cut & come again colourful cornflowers, nigella, sweet peas, & all the cottage garden loveliness.
Some time ago, a few brides came to talk to me about ‘English summer flowers’ for their bridal flowers. How lucky were they on their special day to have blooms selected from a mixture of local flower cutting patches, mixed in with the best stems from Holland.
The abundance of summer flowers makes for perfect seasonal informal arrangements of all colours. Its certainly not only tones of pastel pink & blush that go with sunny days. Spicy corals & orange with the cool tones of cornflower blue work equally perfectly.
Flowers for the table at this time of year needn’t mean just the indoor dining room. Yummy summer flowers in vases adorned patio tables, made informal weekend lunches blend seemlessly into afternoon tea then evening drinks & dinner perfectly.
Cut & come again cornflowers hit the spot everywhere this summer. Used in bouquets & arrangements of any colour combination, their weaving multi length stems & electric blue petals perfect punctuations alongside pastels, jewel tones, lemons & acid greens.
